#45 STATE v. CHANTRY Decision of the Court (2/25/2021)
The AZ Court of Appeals reversed Thomas Chantry’s convictions and sentences for four counts of child molestation and remanded the matter for a new trial because the convictions were obtained with the use of impermissible “other act” evidence. Please note that this does not reverse the convictions from Thomas Chantry’s first trial.
Here are two of the most relevant quotes, but I encourage you to read the entire document:
“¶1 Thomas Jonathan Chantry appeals his convictions and sentences for four counts of child molestation. Because Chantry’s convictions were obtained with the use of impermissible ‘other act’ evidence, we reverse and remand the matter for a new trial.”
“¶27 We agree with Chantry that the superior court abused its discretion by admitting, under Rule 404(b), evidence of Chantry’s excessive, sometimes bare bottomed, spankings of J.W., W.W., and D.L. After prohibiting the State from offering the other-act evidence to show Chantry had an aberrant sexual propensity to commit the charged crimes, the court should not have permitted the State “to raise this same inference under the rubric of ‘intent.’” State v. Ives, 187 Ariz. 102, 110 (1996).”
The Decision of the Court can be read here. When I have obtained a copy from the court, I will add it to Scribd and embed it.
Why does IRBS Seminary offer discounted tuition for TAARBC…a local association that contains contains churches whose elders (Pastor Bob Curley, Pastor David Dykstra, and Pastor Larry Vincent) were involved with ARBCA & Tom Chantry and contains churches whose elders were members of ARBCA’s 2019/2020 AC (Pastor Matt Vincent – Vice Chairman, Pastor Jason Montgomery, Pastor David Shiflet, and Pastor Bob Curley)? [FBC Resignation page 4, paragraph 3 for Bob Curley; Spring 2019 ARBCA Update for the rest]
Theology must be put to practice in the church. For this reason IRBSTS stresses internship with local churches to provide guided growth and experience in pastoral duties.”
Will IRBS Seminary students be interning at any of the TAARBC churches in ARBCA, and/or pastored by men who were involved with ARBCA & Tom Chantry, and/or pastored by men on the 2019/2020 ARBCA AC?
Men at IRBS Seminary that were involved with ARBCA and Tom Chantry:
Jeff Massey (Coordinator of the Doctoral Study Center): On the Membership Committee and AC in 2015/2016, on the Ad Hoc Committee that wrote the ARBCA Reports in 2018, and was the 2019 AC Chairman until his church left ARBCA.
Men at IRBS Seminary that were involved with ARBCA and Tom Chantry but we can’t tell if they are still part of IRBS:
Steve Martin (took the Oath of Office as Core Faculty on 9/11/2018 and spoke as Dean of Students of IRBS Seminary on 12/15/2019 but not listed on IRBS’s website) **As noted in section #10 on Steve Martin’s page, he retired as Dean of Students at IRBS Theological Seminary in April 2020.
Don Lindblad (listed as a Trustee until the Trustee page disappeared in Summer 2018)
Jason Walter (listed as a Trustee until the Trustee page disappeared in Summer 2018, listed as the Secretary of the AC in the Spring 2019 ARBCA Update)
Fred Pugh (listed as a Trustee until the Trustee page disappeared in Summer 2018
Why does IRBS Seminary not list their Dean of Students, Board of Trustees, or Board of Regents anywhere on their website? Why is the public not being allowed to see if the above men remain part of IRBS Seminary?
On 7/6/2018 James Renihan spoke on behalf of IRBS Seminary at Stanmore Baptist Church in Australia.
“Every one of our faculty members must be a man of practical godliness with pursuing holiness. Not just sliding along and not just an academic, but he needs to be a man who in a church is demonstrating to others holiness of life. So that every, every week when a student sits in a classroom, he’s able to look up to that man and esteem him. Not just because he knows a lot about the, the Major Prophets, but because his life backs up and supports what he says. Pray for us. Pray for our leadership. Pray that we will be holy men who walk in the way.”

1997-2009–Member of the Board of Trustees of the Institute of Reformed Baptist Studies (IRBS) at Westminster Theological Seminary California.
2007-2012–Helped to form and later was voted in as Chairman of the Administrative Council of the Georgia Association of Confessional Baptist Churches (GACB). Later named the Coordinator of GACB, ministering to pastors in GACB and other pastors too.
2017-2020–Became the first Dean of Students at the newly formed IRBS THEOLOGICAL SEMINARY in Texas, with incoming students slated to matriculate in the Fall of 2018. Retired in April, 2020.”
At present IRBS Theological Seminary does not list a Dean of Students, so it is unknown if they have a new Dean of Students or are without a Dean of Students. I could find no mention of Steve Martin having retired on IRBS Seminary’s website.
I edited the following section of the IRBS Seminary, ARBCA/CBA, and Tom Chantry Page because Christ Reformed Baptist Church in Vista, CA still lists Jim Renihan as one of their pastors. Additions are in red.
Note: As of late 2022, CRBC Vista’s website is under construction and does not yet list it’s pastors/elders. The changes noted below will be removed from the IRBS Seminary, ARBCA/CBA, and Tom Chantry Page for the time being.

I added to the following section on the Jason Walter’s Page to show that when Tom Chantry preached at CRBC Vista, CA Jason Walter was preaching at Mountain Reformed Baptist Church in Crestline, CA. Additions and Jason’s name are in red.
#4 Bulletins from When Tom Chantry Preached at CRBC Vista, CA (5/29/2016), Proof that Jason Walter Preached at Mountain Reformed Baptist Church on 5/29/2016, & Proof that Pastor Jason Walter Knew about the Allegation of Sexual Molestation Against Tom
On 5/29/2016 Thomas Chantry preached at CRBC in Vista, CA. Pastor Jason Walter had known about the allegation of sexual molestation against Chantry since late January/early February 2016. Nobody else at CRBC knew about the allegation. We were members of CRBC Vista, CA (4 voting members in our family), and my husband was a deacon.Jason Walter was a member of the Membership Committee that recommended CRBC, WI to the 2016 General Assembly.
Why did Jason Walter allow Tom Chantry to preach at CRBC Vista, CA when he knew that Tom was under investigation for molestation?
Why did JasonWalter preach at another church instead of being present at CRBC Vista, CA when Tom Chantry preached there? Why was his unsuspecting flock put in a vulnerable position?
